The opportunities that freelance copywriting hold are causing more and more copywriters to investigate freelancing as a career. If freelance copywriting interests you, then check out these basics on how to be a successful freelance copywriter.
1. Know when to say "NO." If you're a freelance copywriter, one of the first things you need to learn is when to say "no." You are the advertising expert and your client is not. You need to be able to say "no" when your clients give you bad suggestions.
If your client is persistent, then you must know how to compromise. Learning how to manage your clients will make your work much more peaceful and harmonious. At the same time, there will always be clients who refuse to compromise, so you need to know how to get out of a bad situation. Bad clients are quite often not work the time or money.
2. Be polite, persistent, and positive. When dealing with clients, make sure that you always communicate professionally. Always be polite by listening intently to your client, and be persistent if you must. You need to persistently pursue projects and persistently stand by your ideas on how to sell your client's product. This will dramatically improve your level of success as a freelance copywriter.
3. You should also be constantly learning. There is so much material out there that you could study your entire life and not have learned it all. Therefore successful copywriters see themselves as life long students and are constantly improving their product.
4. Take time to relax. One of the main reasons someone becomes a freelance copywriter is to get away from the hectic schedule of a regular job. A stressful work environment at home wont be much helpful, so make sure to take time to relax. Consistent relaxation will also improve the quality of your product, ultimately making you more successful than if you work constantly.
5. Learn to have fun the midst of stress. Someone who loves their profession will be more successful than someone who does not, so learn to keep a positive attitude. If you let the stress of your job consume you, you will eventually learn to hate freelancing.
6. Prize your personal life. Your personal life will help you weather stressful situations, so make sure to keep it a top priority as you develop your freelance copywriting business.
7. Be honest and ethical. Make sure that you can keep the promises you make. If you can't deliver what you're client wants, then be honest and tell them the truth. Never compromise on agreements and conduct ethical business arrangements.
8. Be a good business-person. Since a freelance copywriter owns their own business, you need to make sure you know how to run a business well. You need to know how to manage your time and your money. You should also know your rights as a small business owner.
You should be aware of the most recent ethical standards, laws, and tax reforms. You should also update yourself with the current pricing guidelines, effective negotiation skills, ways of maintaining records, and organizations you can join.
9. Don't take rejections personally. As a freelance copywriter, you will be rejected often, and taking rejection personally will severely hurt your abilities at becoming successful. Be professional when rejected and move on to the next potential client.
10. Never ever miss a deadline. Being a freelancer doesn't mean that you can miss a deadline because you don't have a boss. Failing to meet deadlines will kill your chances at being a successful freelance copywriter.
Hopefully you found these pointers helpful. If you're interested in learning more about freelance copywriting, then there is plenty of information out there that can help you become a successful freelancer. Just search the Internet for tutorials on copywriting, and you're bound to find something.
